" Let me know how can I help" isn't helping. Its just making you feel good. Its just quenching your thrust of selfishness. Yes it may seem you harsh words b'cos the truth is always.
Putting status on some worthless social networking " yeah! Today I did this something helpful" or yelling about some cruelty done by mentally troubled at somewhere is just "yelling". People skip you even without taking a look. Social media is just a virtual thing for entertainment, memes, jokes, Its just another way of entertainment and if you will keep doing this, it makes you a babble and yes of course ' a figure among cipher'
If you are really seeking change then you can only do by doing little efforts around your surrounding. Make them realize what is really meant to be done for those who are seeking "help".
Remember if you are Kind, Gentle and Helpful then you don't need to show off because these nature aren't meant to be showing off.
